With all of the bad news about the water in Flint, Michigan it makes sense that people might be a little more fearful about drinking their tap water. There are always trace minerals, some of them not good for you, in public drinking water, but levels are normally in safe ranges. There is an entire industry out there that helps make sure drinking water is safe.

If you live in an area where the water isn’t safe you still have options, especially with the boom in the bottled water industry. You have all sorts of choices, from flavored water to water with electrolytes in it. Just because you might not be able to, or want to, drink your tap water, that doesn’t mean it’s OK to not drink water.

Over half your body is made up of water. As you sweat during a workout you lose water. There are other times (like during illness) when you can become dehydrated also. While you’ll find all sorts of recommendations for how much water you need to drink each day, some people need more than others, and there are times when you may need more water (like on a hot day).

Not only is your water consumption replenishing the water that your body loses during a normal day, but it also helps with your health. The water you drink helps keep your skin stay moist and healthy, from the inside out. It also helps keep your organs working properly.

The water you drink also helps to flush toxins from your body. By doing so it helps increase your energy and can help you stay healthier. If you’re feeling ill at all, sipping some water can help with all sorts of ailments, from constipation to headaches. In fact, a headache can be a sign of dehydration and your body is telling you it needs water.

Finding Healthy Water

Every city water system has troubles now and then. A water main breaks in town and you’ll be boiling water for cooking or even washing dishes for a few days until things are fixed and straightened out. It’s just part of life and technology.

If you don’t like the results of your city water tests, maybe because of the amount of rust in the water system or because of the amount of arsenic found (or any other minerals that can cause health risks), you need to consider some different options for water. If you don’t want to fill the landfills with endless plastic bottles you have options too.

Instead of buying multipacks of pre-bottled water at the grocery store, buy a larger empty jug (next to the water fill station in the water aisle of many grocery stores) and fill that. You can then bring that same bottle back in every time you need water. You may want to consider having two so that you can always have a full one on hand. Clean it every so often with white vinegar to kill any bacteria (and make sure to get plastic that is BPA free).
