Drug-free Relief for Allergy Season

ARA Content
(ARA) - As retailers pull allergy and cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine off store shelves to help stop the production of the illegal drug methamphetamine, consumers are looking for other ways to alleviate their allergy symptoms.

Dr. Diane Heatley, a Madison, Wis., ear, nose and throat physician says, "There are several alternative ways to help treat itchy nose, sneezing and sinus congestion this time of year without the use of drugs."

Dr. Heatley suggests the following:

Maintain a sensible/well-balanced diet -- A balanced diet refers to the intake of appropriate types and adequate amounts of foods and drinks to supply nutrition and energy for the maintenance of overall body health. According to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines (RDA), there are three guidelines to follow in order to maintain a healthy diet: Eat three meals a day, do not skip breakfast and follow a sensible eating plan.

Exercise regularly -- For the greatest overall health benefits, 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic activity three or more times a week is recommended. Additionally, some type of muscle strengthening activity and stretching at least twice a week is also important to overall body health.

Wash your nose -- Call it spring cleaning for your nose. A scientifically-proven remedy that is gaining popularity for sinus congestion and allergies is also one of the oldest: A warm saltwater rinse of the nasal passages called nasal wash. The drug-free treatment can be used as often as needed and is recommended after exposure to known allergens. For example, one should wash their nose after mowing the lawn if allergic to grass. Reduce exposure to dust mite allergens -- Keep upholstered furniture and carpet to a minimum in your home. Encase your mattress, box springs and pillows in washable zippered encasings. Use an air purifier to help control odors, dust, pollen, mold and other bacteria. If you are exposed to these allergens, try washing your nose immediately.

Reduce exposure to pollens -- Stay indoors during peak pollen allergy seasons. You can research pollen counts in your area by visiting www.pollen.com. Keep windows and doors closed; all that fresh air can aggravate your symptoms. Caulk and seal windows and replace filters on air conditioning systems to stop pollen and dust filtration.

"In addition to helping to relieve allergy symptoms, alternative treatments will not have the side effects that come with some OTC drugs," says Dr. Heatley. "Alternative remedies can also be beneficial for allergy sufferers who don't like the idea of taking medicine."
