What exactly is Cialis and is it right for you?

Antonio LeMaire
Developed by the biotech company ICOS, the drug tadalafil was approved by the FDA in late 2003 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED, or male impotence). Marketed by the pharmaceutical firm Ely Lilly & Company under the brand name Cialis, the drug is the third pill approved in the US for the treatment of ED, after Viagra (1998) and Levitra (August 2003).

Available by prescription only, Cialis has become extremely popular among men suffering from erectile dysfunction. Unlike Viagra, which lasts for approximately four hours, a single dose of Cialis typically lasts for 36 hours, prompting some to call it the "weekend drug."

Millions of men who have experienced difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection have turned to Cialis for help. The drug helps increase blood flow to the penis, and has helped men of all ages achieve longer and harder erections, and greater satisfaction with their sex lives. Yet despite the impressive results that many men have reported after using Cialis, it is important to understand that it is not for everyone.

Who Shouldn't Take Cialis?

* Cialis is available only by prescription and is recommended exclusively for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. To know for sure whether you have this condition, you must consult with a qualified, licensed physician. The physicians at eDrugstore are US-licensed, and they will use your free and confidential online consultation to determine what treatment is right for you.
* Cialis is not recommended for recreational use. Men who have not experienced erectile dysfunction should not take Cialis.
* There is no clinical evidence to suggest Cialis stimulates sexual desire, and therefore it should not be taken as an aphrodisiac or to increase sexual excitement.
* Men who are taking another drug to treat their erectile dysfunction should not take Cialis. Similarly, it is inadvisable to take Cialis if you are undergoing some other form of treatment intended to improve your erections.
* Men who take nitrates in any form should NEVER take Cialis, since taking the two in combination with one another could result in a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Nitroglycerin, commonly prescribed for chest pain, contains nitrates, as do a number of other prescription medications.
* Some recreational drugs like amyl nitrate (aka poppers) also contain nitrates. Do not take Cialis if you use amyl nitrate or similar drugs.
* Cialis works for up to 36 hours. Do not take it unless you intend to have sex within that time period.
* Anyone who has been advised not to engage in sexual intercourse because of cardiovascular risk should not take Cialis. This includes men who have recently suffered a stroke or heart attack.
* Men who suffer from low blood pressure, also known as hypotension, may be advised not to take Cialis.
Cialis Side Effects To Know About

In the event that your physician determines that you have some level of erectile dysfunction and that Cialis could help, be aware of the possible side effects you may experience, some more common than others:

* The most commonly reported side effects from Cialis are headache, congestion, upset stomach, muscle ache, back pain and flushing.
* In rare cases, men have experienced sudden decreases or changes in vision after using Cialis.
* Also on rare occasions, men taking Cialis have reported a condition known as priapism (an erection lasting more than four hours). This condition requires immediate medical attention.
The best way to know whether Cialis might help with your erectile dysfunction is to consult with a physician
