Secrets to Professional Painting: Paint Like the Pros with these Hints

ARA Content
(ARA) - If you've ever taken on a painting project that was a little too time consuming, you may have found yourself wondering what the pros know that you don't. The fact is that you can get basic painting information at any hardware store or big box retailer -- they'll tell you about taping off your trim, prepping and priming the walls, and how to choose and apply the right paint.

But all the advice in the world won't do any good if you don't have the right tools to help you get the job done -- that's the real trick of the trade. Investing in the right equipment will get you off to a good start, and ensure a high-quality finished project. It doesn't have to cost a lot of money, either. Some of the items you'll need are quite inexpensive, and some of them are reusable, which makes them a good long-term investment.

The first step in getting a room ready to paint is moving as much furniture as possible out of the room, both to keep it from being damaged and to make maneuvering easier and safer. If there are pieces that you can't move, you need to make sure they are completely covered. Wagner Spray Tech recently introduced the Anchor Drop cloth, an innovative design that incorporates a drawstring into a circular drop cloth. Simply drape the cloth over a chair or other item, pull the cord shut, and the drop cloth stays securely in place, completely protecting the furniture. It is available in three sizes, for just about any job.

Next, you'll want to prep the room, covering up any areas that you don't want to get painted, such as baseboards and window frames. This can be a time-consuming and tedious process, but don't be tempted to skip it, or you'll find yourself spending even more time after the fact cleaning up stray paint splatters. One way to make this job easier and quicker is the Mask-It. This handy gadget dispenses 1-inch masking tape without muss or fuss. The built-in metal cutting blade means you have everything you need at your fingertips. And at $5.99, it is an inexpensive solution to tangled rolls of masking tape.

Now that you're ready to paint, protect your clothes with inexpensive coveralls from Wagner. You may also want to wear a protective hood so your hair doesn't get an unexpected dye job while you're painting. And shoe protectors easily slip on over shoes to protect them and your floors. Simply remove them when you leave the room you're painting and you won't inadvertently track paint throughout the house.

No matter how careful you are, there are bound to be the inevitable drips. Wagner's new multi-purpose wipes make cleanup easy. The wetted wipes clean paint, grease and adhesives from hands, tools and working surfaces. The wipes come in an easy dispensing canister and the kind-to-your hands formula contains aloe vera and vitamin E.

To keep your walls looking their best, Wagner has an ingenious touch up solution. Wall Magic takes care of storage, application and record-keeping all in one. The Paint Storage and Touch-Up kit includes three 8-ounce reusable air-tight bottles to store your paint, a 3-inch roller and mini roller arm, a brush for crevices, a funnel for filling, and a paint journal all in one convenient storage case.

When you're done painting, simply fill one of the bottles with the paint you've used (the air-tight container will store latex paint for three to five years and oil based 18-30 months). When it's time to touch up your walls, simply attach the roller to the bottle, make your repair, and stow away until next time. All components are washable and reusable, for use over and over.

Armed with these useful helpers, your next painting job should be a breeze.
