Ceramic tile flooring – A stylish look for your home

Adrian Hardy
Ceramic tile flooring is an extremely popular form of flooring for most people. It may be a little more expensive than other flooring materials but it can give your home a classical look and is highly durable to boot. Although it is not completely sure where ceramic tiling originated from, it was certainly adopted and embraced by many of the southern countries of Europe, notably Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal. It was ideal in warmer climates because it stayed cool and helped to keep the home cool. It was, and is, extremely easy to clean and maintain. Simply sweeping away dirt or dust with a brush or cleaning with a mop and water. Some of these countries are now the principal producers and designers of tiling and tiling designs. This article will cover some of the things you should consider when thinking about adding ceramic tile flooring into your home.

About Ceramic Tile

Porcelain and other forms of ceramic tiling are made from numerous materials, especially clay and some man made materials. They are shaped and designed and then fired in a kiln to give them a durable quality. Installing ceramic tiling into the homes gives it a classical look but can also evoke a modern or minimalist feel to the room. Ceramic tiling can come in a variety of colors and designs. The more elaborate the design the more you can expect to pay for them.

Ceramic tile flooring can work well in almost any room. In many homes in Spain and Italy, especially around the Mediterranean, most rooms, including the bathroom and kitchen, will be fitted with floor tiling. This is partly a cultural affinity to tiling and a practical reason that it keeps the house cool during the summer. However most people associate ceramic tile flooring with the kitchen, bathroom and maybe the hallway because ceramic tiling is easy to clean and resistant to water and other wear and tear.

Choosing The Right Ceramic Tile

You have a few options to consider when it comes to choosing ceramic tile flooring. The obvious considerations are the the size, color, shape and finish of the tiles.

The room that you plan to put the tiles in can help to determine the size of the tiles. The larger the room the larger the tiles. Large tiles in a small room will make the room look out of proportion. Larger tiles are also easier and quicker to install.

You have a wide variety of colors to choose from. You can even customize the tiling and select your own color and design. This means you can match the tile color to the color of the walls or any other part of the room. Designed, patterned or mosaic tiles can give a unique look to a room. You can design your own mosaic pattern or select an existing design. Patterned or mosaic tiles are particularly popular in hallways.

Tiles can also come in a variety of shapes. The popular choices are square or rectangular but you can even get diamond, hexagon, octagon, triangular or round tiles for a more eccentric or quirky look.

The finish of the ceramic tile flooring is the final consideration you need to make. A tile can either be plain or glazed. Glazed has a glossy appearance and makes the material resistant to dampness and water. Plain tiling has a matte appearance and is often used in outdoor settings. Glazed tiles are generally more popular for their appearance and durability but they are more expensive than plain tiling.
