Prized Drawings

UCL
UCL Art Collections are holding a new exhibition entitled 'Prized Drawings: A Selection from the Slade 1897–1953' until 30 March 2007 in the Strang Print Room.

Founded in 1871, with the aim of providing progressive art training based on the intensive study of the life model, the Slade School of Fine Art awarded annual prizes to its students for life, antique, portrait and landscape drawing.

From the 1890s onwards, the prize-winning entries were kept by UCL, with student works being added to the collection annually through a purchase prize. As a result, the collection today is a unique resource containing rare early work by many important artists who studied at the Slade from the 1890s to the present day.

Artists represented include Stanley Spencer, Walter Sickert, Augustus John, Gwen John, William Orpen, Dora Carrington, Henry Tonks and David Bomberg. The exhibition features their drawings and by many more artists, illustrating key changes in art practice and education over the decades.

The Strang Print Room is also hosting a number of free lunchtime gallery talks, on subjects ranging from 'Life Drawing at the Slade 1890–1950' to 'Political Caricature in 18th Century England'.
