Chief Rabbi Jakobovits memorial lecture: Are Genes our Destiny? |
| UCL |
Professor Michel Revel of the Weizmann Institute of Science and Chairman of the Israel National Bioethics Council, will deliver the annual Chief Rabbi Jakobovits memorial lecture on Tuesday 28 November.
Professor Revel's lecture is entitled 'Are Genes our Destiny?' He will argue that the recently completed human genome project is a reductionist approach to human nature, which has benefits for mankind but which ought not to be viewed as explaining all of human nature to the exclusion of the environment, lifestyle and education.
He will also consider the viewpoint of Jewish philosophy, with its emphasis on man's free will and on the moral responsibility that each of us has for his/her actions.
Professor Revel received the Israel Prize in 1999 and the Emet Prize in 2004 for his contributions to medicine and biotechnology.
