FIFA Interactive World Cup 2006 to get underway in the UK on 27 October |
| FIFA.com |
The path to 2006 FIFA Interactive World Cup glory will start in six cities across the UK on 27 October, promising gamers and football fans a thrilling competition. The only global virtual football tournament, organised by FIFA for the third time, will consist of at least 20 events and 25 Xbox Live tournaments covering 31 countries, culminating in the Grand Final in Amsterdam on Saturday, 9 December 2006.
Football fans interested in participating in this year's FIFA Interactive World Cup should visit the event section on www.FIFA.com to find out how to secure a spot in the Amsterdam final, where 128 people will battle it out for the virtual football crown by playing Electronic Arts' (EA) FIFA 07 on Xbox 360. As a prize, the FIFA Interactive World Player 2006 will receive a special trophy as well as USD 20,000. In addition, the champion will attend the FIFA World Player Gala in the Opera House in Zurich on 18 December 2006, when this year's football stars will be commended on stage.
"The FIFA Interactive World Cup unites passion for football with the world of interactive entertainment. Gamers are battling it out for an official FIFA award that places interactive football in the same bracket as its offline parent competitions - the various FIFA World Cups played by traditional means. We are pleased that we are able to pay tribute to this special category of football players and are greatly looking forward to this year's event, which is already the third of its kind. The FIFA Interactive World Cup gives us the chance to further promote the game on a completely different level," said Urs Linsi, FIFA General Secretary.
Over the next few months, the FIFA Interactive Organising Team will pass, dribble and score their way to events on five continents with a mammoth kit bag including 312 Xbox consoles and 624 control pads. "We are thrilled to work with our friends at FIFA and Xbox to bring the third FIFA Interactive World Cup to football fans and gamers across the world. This year, we are taking contestants even closer to virtual football action with the all new FIFA 07 gameplay action on the Xbox 360," said Clive Downie, vice-president of international marketing at Electronic Arts.

"We are really excited to be part of the FIFA Interactive World Cup 2006, exclusively bringing next generation high-definition football gaming action to players across the globe with FIFA 07. It's great to be hosting the connected gaming tournaments on Xbox Live giving our 3 million members worldwide the chance be part of this great competition and take on their friends," said Richard Teversham, Head of Marketing, Xbox Europe.
To enter the event, gamers can simply turn up at one of the FIFA Interactive World Cup Qualifier Events on the day as indicated on www.FIFA.com. Each FIFA Interactive World Cup Qualifier Event will have a host of activities away from the competition for players and spectators, including a real-life football skills area, live music from up and coming DJs and bands plus a chance to meet some high-profile football stars.
