FIFA President lauds Annan's achievements and close cooperation between FIFA and United Nations |
| FIFA.com |
In a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who will end his mandate at the helm of the United Nations on 31 December 2006, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter praised Annan's achievements in the world of international politics and diplomacy as well his outstanding personality.
"A few days before the completion of your mandate as Secretary-General of the United Nations organisation, it is my duty as the FIFA President and my honour as a person to convey to you, on behalf of FIFA and on my own behalf, our deep feelings of gratitude for your endless dedication for the good of the nations of our planet," wrote Blatter.
"We all appreciated the principles of your action, the vision of your leadership and the humanity of your person," Blatter continued.
Equal parts diplomat and advocate, civil servant and CEO, the Secretary-General is a symbol of United Nations ideals and a spokesman for the interests of the world's peoples, in particular the poor and vulnerable among them. Kofi Annan was the first UN Secretary-General to come to FIFA headquarters. With this historic visit on 24 January 2006, he returned the one made by the FIFA President in June 1999, which marked the beginning of an era of close partnership between the UN and many of its bodies and agencies, such as UNICEF, ILO, WHO, UNEP and UNDP, and FIFA and its member associations in projects such as "Say Yes for Children", "Red Card to Child Labour", "Go Girls" or "Unite for Children, Unite for Peace". In his letter to Annan, Blatter also praised the positive results of this intense and fruitful cooperation between FIFA and the United Nations.
With a view to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa, Blatter stressed that "the three and half years in front of us constitute a window of opportunity to mobilise the energies in Africa and elsewhere around football as a unique vehicle to impact health, education and peace building in Africa. Moreover, the vision of a successful FIFA World Cup™ in Africa will definitely contribute to the fight against racism and against the marginalisation of the continent."

The FIFA President hopes that the fruitful cooperation will continue under the administration of the new UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, who will take office on 1 January 2007.
