Peñarol is the FIBA Americas League Champion!

Theallineed.com
Despite losing to Soles 84-79, Peñarol is the first FIBA Americas League Champion in their first edition.

The championship was given to Peñarol due to a difference in goal average after a three way tie with Mexicali and Miami.

A great job at the point guard position by Tato Rodriguez and Lucas Picarelli along with the effectiveness of Roman Gonzalez, the three pointers by Juan Locatelli and the freedom offensively by Quincy Wadley was key in this impressive run by Peñarol during the tournament.

Soles started with an effective attack from the perimeter taking a 19-13 lead after a three pointer by Marcos Chavez. The host had a 25-18 lead in the first quarter after 9 points by Dejuan Wheat and 7 by Richard Lopez.

In the second quarter Peñarol had their first lead after a two pointer by Lucas Picarelli and two free throws, one awarded by continuity after a foul called and another by a technical to Soles bench to go up 39-36.

CThe first half ended 45-41 in favor of the team from Mar del Plata after a three pointer by Wadley in the closing seconds. Wadley had 15 points at halftime while Locatelli had 8.

Both teams were efficient from the free throw line and the perimeter but Soles was dominant in the boards 24-13 thanks to their advantage in height and strenght.

At the start of the third quarter Peñarol continued to increase their lead early 49-41 and stayed on top until Dejuan Wheat started hetting three pointers to tie the game at 62. The third quarter ended tied at 68.

The host tried to increase the lead in order to get the championship but they could not establish continuity offensively and the Argentineans were more pacient at the end.

Greg Lewis led the winners with 22 points and 12 boatds while dejuan Wheat scored 20, Richard López 15 and Horacio Llamas 13.

Quincy Wadley led the champs with 28 points shooting 6-19 from the field and 12-15 from the free throw line.
