Mobile Phone: Overview

A mobile phone or a cellular phone is a portable electronic device for long range communications. In addition of the standard calling function cell phones also provide us with additional services like SMS which is used for text messages and email. And also provide MMS which is used for sending multimedia content like images and videos. The working of a cell phone is somewhat similar to wireless radio. Mobiles are designed to work on cellular networks which in turn are connected to public switched telephone network (PSTN).

Mobile phones also often have features beyond sending text messages and making voice calls, they are used in plenty of stuff like Internet browsing, music playback, personal organizers, e-mail, instant messaging, built-in cameras, ring tones, games, radio, Push-to-Talk (PTT), infrared and Bluetooth connectivity, call registers, video call and serve as a wireless modem for a PC. They also provide the facility of downloading of different contents like videos etcetera.

General Features of a Mobile Phone

As discussed earlier cell phones or mobile phones are designed to work on special networks called cellular networks which are composed of a standard set of services which allow the different types of cell phones for communication with each other.

The phone operator or carrier is required before the start of the phone. A SIM card is issued by the operator if the network is GSM. The SIM card contains the subscription and authentication parameters which are unique for each and every customer.

All the mobile phones contain a built-in calendar and a watch. It also comes with a calculator for simple mathematical calculations. Some mobile phones even include some games which can be played any time on the mobile phone's display screen.

Extra Features

The cell phones not only support calls but they also support other functionalities like sending and receiving text messages or SMS, access to WAP services they also provide full internet access with the help of GPRS. Some latest models of cell phones even allow the user to send and receive pictures, sound and video recordings too. Generally this feature is called MMS which means Multimedia Messaging Service.

Some phones are also compatible with GPS transmissions. Some phones have a built in GPS receiver while some phone can be connected to some GPS receiver via Bluetooth. Another feature nowadays quite common is Push to talk; its function is similar to walkie-talkie.

Modern mobile phones can be personalized to a great extent. There are applications which are specially designed for making the cell phone more personalized and user defined. Such as downloadable ring tones interchangeable covers and logos. All this has brought the cell phone market a big boost.

Camera Phones

Modern cellular phones are equipped with the professional cameras so that you do not forget any special moment of your life. Nokia's latest model in its famous N-Series N-95 has a 5-megapixel digital camera with the dvd quality movie recording.
Due to increase in use of cell phones with cameras some third party vendors have developed software with the help of which the images and videos can be edited and mixed inside the mobile phone itself.

In short mobile phones have affected our lifestyles in a positive way, with all the features provided by the modern mobile phones our life has become so much easy.
