Mombasa, The Celebrity Secret Hide Away

James Kamweru
May be it is the good weather. It could be the white sands, the soothing sensation of walking bare feet on the beaches. It could also be the ability to shake off the press and have quiet moments to oneself that makes Mombasa such a popular destination for celebrities. Beach sports, both water and land are available in abundance. They jet into the country, some in private jets landing directly at Moi international airport in Mombasa. Unlike the capital city Nairobi, Mombasa has few media personalities that are based there, thus making it an ideal hiding place. Unlike the highly marketed reclaimed beaches down south, Mombasa's beach is natural. The Kenyan people are friendly and hospitable. They have no problem conversing in English, making them popular with English speakers worldwide. Celebrities who have visited Mombasa quietly in the recent past include Kenny Rodgers, the William sisters Serena and Venus, Oprah Winfrey and many movie stars. Most of them prefer to come for quiet moments and the local media reports about them long after they have left. Bill Gates has also had his quiet moments in Mombasa. But supermodel Naomi Campbell does differently. She owns a home in Malindi that she visits every year. She appreciates the Kenyan coast and her hospitable people, and hence never misses to keep her Kenyan date. Quality accommodation is available here, even for the top of the range upmarket. Economy travelers also have a wide variety of hotels and cottages to choose from. Just what makes Mombasa so popular? There is something for everyone. For those who love the night life, there are numerous nightspots to choose from. The sound of lovely African music with live bands that can take you around the world of music within a night is irresistable. The city has excellent weather with sunbathing being possible in ten months every year. Even the coldest months, June and July can provide sunny mornings that are lovely to busk in as always. Kenya lies on the equator and therefore it does not experience extreme changes in weather patterns. For the lovers of history, the town is rich in historical sites. From the famous fort Jesus within town to the Gedi Ruins an hour's drive towards Kilifi. Mombasa also serves as a base for the traveler who wishes to sample Kenya's world famous wildlife. The vast Tsavo National park is only four hours drive away. Africa has many lovely destinations but none matches Mombasa when it comes to just having it easy and enjoying personal quiet moments.
