Being a great leader can help in many different walks of life, it can help to give you confidence socially, it can drastically improve your chances of forging a successful career and it can even help to make you a better parent.
Not everyone is born with the natural gifts to lead, to inspire and to command others, in fact very few are. If you are not a natural-born leader then don’t worry as you can work on your skills to become a great leader in the future. We spoke with Haris Ahmed Chicago– based leadership expert who described what it takes to be a great leader.
The very best leaders in the World are the ones who are the most dedicated and committed about what they do. This is something which you need to ensure that you have if you wish to be a great leader. If you are in a job for example that you do not feel passionate about then you are unlikely to succeed as a leader within it. The people who you are leading need to look at you and see your level of desire in order for them to feel it too.
There is no such thing as a silent leader and if you want to be a great leader then you need to ensure that you have excellent communication skills. Communication is about more than just conveying your message with clarity and precision, it also works both ways and you will need to be prepared to open your ears to anyone who wants to talk, offer advice or ideas.
As the leader of any team it is not just important that you understand the role of a leader in the team setting but also each role within the team. Within your role as team leader you will need to give the right tasks to the right people at the right time and in order to do so you must understand how each role works. You will also need to be able to teach and show people how to perform to the best of their ability in a team dynamic and if you don’t fully understand each position then this will be difficult to do.
Lead by Example
As the leader you will be looked to for inspiration and for the example you set and because of this you must hold yourself to an exceptionally high standard. If you are cutting corners, slacking off or not giving the proper amount of attention to a task in hand then you cannot expect those you are leading to do any different. If you want to be a great leader then you must lead by example and show those in your team that you are setting the standard to which they should be aiming for. It is impossible to gain high levels of work or respect if you are not showing people how things should be done with your own actions.
