It has been almost a year since Disney Plus was born in November 2019. Despite its short lifespan, the service has been a total success for the Mickey Mouse company. According to its financial report for the fourth quarter of 2020, the platform reached 73.7 million subscribers in its first year. The figure, of course, is truly impressive, and demonstrates the strong public interest in Disney content.
The subscriber report has surpassed all the exceptional ones, not only from investors and analysts, but also from Disney itself. When they launched Disney Plus the previous year, the company mentioned that their goal was to reach 60 to 90 million users by 2024. The achievement is already done, however, they got it four years earlier than expected. Today, it is the fastest growing service.
Clearly, part of Disney Plus’ success in 2020 is due to the pandemic, which was also reflected in services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The fact is that confinement led to millions of people turning to entertainment services to make the difficult time more enjoyable. However, Disney’s service would not have reached those figures without the help of its excellent original content catalog.
The Mandalorian, to mention just one, has been an Internet sensation since the first season. Mando and Baby Yoda have shown that Star Wars has a lot of potential beyond the big screen -in terms of ‘live action’ productions- and other series from the same universe are on the way, as well as the debut of Marvel Studios in Disney Plus. The production house is preparing the series of Wandavision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, She-Hulk, Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel.
The so-called “Streaming War” is being defined precisely by the original content that each service can offer. Disney’s potential in this sector is abysmal because of the large number of franchises and characters it boasts. Let’s not forget, moreover, that the service will land next November 17 in Mexico and Latin America, so subscribers will surely grow again in a remarkable way.
