Toothpaste: Choosing what to Buy & what Ingredients to Shy away from!

There are hundreds of different toothpaste brands on sale in the United States, so it can be really hard to work out which brands are the right ones for you and your family. Each toothpaste claims to do something special and unique, but many people don’t understand how different brands could help (or even harm) them. In fact, some traditional toothpaste ingredients are now thought to be very bad for you.

Here is some information about the ingredients that you might want to avoid next time you are choosing a tube of toothpaste. At the same time visit your dentist regularly and ask them for further advice. There is a dentist in Los Angeles who will be happy to answer any questions you have.

  • Parabens
Parabens are thought to be mild carcinogens, although they are not estimated to be deadly enough to warrant a full ban. If you want to reduce your risk, you can reduce the levels of parabens that you consume by choosing toothpastes which are paraben-free. Parabens have also been linked to increased estrogenic hormone levels.
  • Gluten
You may not even realize that toothpaste contains gluten. Although most people do not swallow toothpaste by design, the small amounts of gluten that can be present in toothpaste can still affect celiac sufferers if a small amount reaches their stomachs. Cutting out gluten based toothpaste could completely change your digestive health if you have a sensitivity.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (SLS)
SLSs are actually an irritant to the skin and have been known to aggravate small tears in the gums or mouth. Some people who are particularly sensitive have actually developed canker sores in their mouths after using toothpastes which contained these chemicals. Regular inflammation to the teeth and gums can cause real damage to your teeth, and may even result in them falling out!

Most whitening toothpastes are not recommended by dentists, because they are more abrasive than other types of toothpaste are. These toothpastes can actually cause irreparable damage to your teeth. You may also want to speak to your dentist if you are considering choosing a brand which is good for sensitive teeth. They may be able to find the root cause of your sensitivity and help you to sort that out instead. Alternatively, they may be able to recommend a better brand.
