The Italian virologists maintain that the coronavirus “is losing strength” when it is blocked by several factors such as heat and the use of the mask, implanted in the new normality in Italy -and in other countries such as Spain-. According to Arnaldo Caruso, president of the Italian Society of Virology (Siv-Isv), this element is one of the “most important to counteract the viral spread”.
Caruso, together with researchers from the Microbiology Laboratory of the Civil Hospital of Brescia, has managed to isolate an “extremely less powerful” variant of the Sars-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19 disease.
“The strains that have circulated, with more or less variation between them, are attributable to those that have invaded the whole world. We had a strain very similar to Wuhan’s,” the expert told Adnkronos.
For Caruso, professor of microbiology at the University of Brescia, “what is happening, as with all respiratory viruses, is attributable to the seasonal nature of the infection. With the onset of the late spring season these viruses tend to disappear for reasons we don’t yet know exactly”.
For this reason, the factors behind the seasonality of respiratory viruses, including Sars-CoV-2, could be numerous, Caruso suggests: “From temperature to humidity, to ultraviolet rays, or even the fact that perhaps with heat our immune defenses at the mucosal level are stronger. This doesn’t mean that the viruses are gone,” he added. “If we look for them here and there, they are still there,” insists this expert.
Heat would not be the only factor, according to Caruso. “Even masks, which I have always promoted from the beginning as a form of protection for those who receive or give viruses, are an important tool in combating viral circulation”.
However, Caruso warns about this variant that they have managed to isolate: “We still don’t know if this variant is circulating and how much it circulates, but that’s not why the cases of Covid-19 are less numerous and less serious,” he indicated.
