An In-Depth Look at the Different Types of Waste Management Methods You can Take Advantage Of

Home & FamilyAn In-Depth Look at the Different Types of Waste Management Methods You can Take Advantage Of

Garbage is a serious issue – waste is a cumbersome substance that needs to be handled with care. However, there’s good news: thanks to innovative companies, waste is now being taken care of in different, more eco-friendly ways – at less cost. The thing is, what was traditionally considered rubbish may actually be used in different manners, and what was once a problem is now a potential solution. It’s a matter of looking at it from a different angle. Here’s an in-depth look at the different types of waste management methods you can take advantage of.

Out with the old

Traditionally, waste was simply dumped in a big hole in the ground (or simply dumped), and these landfills are still around and actively used in many countries. Another way of getting rid of waste is by burning it – which can reduce its volume by up to 70%. However, these old-fashioned methods are disappearing and newer, more efficient ways are becoming more and more popular for good reasons; as more and more attention is given to the planet, eco-friendlier ways of waste management allow leading companies and governments to profit.

Recovery and recycling

Recovery means taking an item which would otherwise be discarded and using it again, not necessarily in the way it was originally designed for. An example would be to take an empty plastic soda bottle, cut off the top, and use it as a flowering pot for seedlings or as a container to store screws, bolts, or nails in. Many items can often be recovered and reused with a little bit of imagination and some decorative paint.

Organic waste, often from the garden or the kitchen, is useful in creating compost. Compost is created by allowing the plant material to decompose through a bio-degradation process – a natural process whereby micro-organisms break down the material and transform it into a nutritious and fertile soil-like growing medium. It takes a while – months, even – but the process allows items which would otherwise be discarded to transform themselves into very valuable compost material.

Waste to energy

WtE (Waste to Energy) allows us to produce heat, electricity, or fuel from items which can’t be recycled. The process creates renewable energy and allows us to transform waste into a productive resource.

No doubt there will be many new ways of waste management in the future; government and private companies are investing in research and new methods to ensure that what was once considered waste can be used again and therefore considered an asset. It’s not that there will ever be a time when there will be no more garbage; it’s a matter of thinking outside the box and finding ways to profit from waste.
