The most eco-friendly premium flooring solutions

Home & FamilyThe most eco-friendly premium flooring solutions

Many homeowners today aren’t just concerned about the beauty that their floors can bring for their homes. Modern awareness in our society includes sensitivity to environmental issues, which is why an increasing number of people prefer products that are eco-friendly, including premium flooring solutions.

Some people are worried about the environmental impact of some flooring solutions. Take hardwood flooring, for instance. It’s one of the most popular flooring options in the world, but sometimes people’s conscience may be pricked by the image of various rainforests disappearing just to make our homes beautiful.

However, there are still some premium solutions which offer great beauty while staying friendly to the environment. If you want to do your part in preserving the environment, you may want to consider the following options:

1.- FSC-certified
This is perhaps the most straightforward option for many people who want the elegance of hardwood flooring while still maintaining their environmental awareness. You can purchase hardwood flooring that’s been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which aims to promote the responsible management of forests all over the world. When you pick hardwood with this certification, you know for sure that the manufacturers adhered to stringent environmental and even social standards in producing the flooring.

2.- Reclaimed and salvaged hardwood
Some manufacturers may use these terms interchangeably, but technically reclaimed and salvaged wood is different. Reclaimed wood refers to wood that’s been previously used for other buildings. They tend to be many decades old, and they have this singular weathered patina that’s quite impressive. Since it’s been air-dried for years, the wood is also extremely stable.
In contrast, salvaged wood hasn’t been previously used. They’re wood that normally won’t have been used for anything at all. Usually, they come from fallen or dead trees, or trees that needed to be felled so that people could build a house or a road. You then get to use them, so they don’t go to waste.

3.- Bamboo
Bamboo can be considered a premium flooring option, because it’s so striking in its looks that it seems expensive. But it’s more affordable than you expect, because the bamboo wood is easily available. It’s a very sustainable source, because bamboo vegetation grows in just 3 to 5 years. Other trees take 20 years to grow. It’s also easy to install and maintain, and it can last for a very long time.

4.- Cork.
This is a rather new entry into the world of flooring solutions, but many manufacturers and homeowners have recognized the inherent advantages of cork flooring. The cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree, and the tree doesn’t have to be cut down for the bark to be harvested. The bark grows back in just 3 years, so it’s incredibly sustainable.
Many modern families love cork flooring because it looks great and comfy for bare feet. It’s easy to maintain, and it even has antimicrobial properties that reduce allergen levels in the home. It can even act as a natural insect repellant, plus it’s also a fire retardant. It’s extremely popular as flooring for homes with children for all these reasons.

5.- Concrete
Many people don’t like the idea of concrete, but then they’re thinking of the old look of concrete. Now there’s polished concrete, and it looks a great deal better. Most people use concrete as a subflooring, but with this option, they won’t need a traditional type of flooring for their topmost flooring layer. The concrete can be polished and tinted to look fantastic instead. It’s easy to clean, extremely durable, and it will never need to be replaced.

Pick any of these options, and you can enjoy a beautiful home with fantastic flooring. At the same time, you’re helping the environment in your small way!
