Finding a sushi restaurant in Charleston isn’t as easy as it may seem. Although the city is located close to the ocean, most restaurants in the area don’t tend to utilize the local catch to create raw seafood dishes. However, although there aren’t a lot of sushi places in Charleston, there are still a few that are worth checking out. If you’re a fan of all things Japanese, are forever searching for how to make origami, and love your raw fish, keep reading for a list of some of the best sushi restaurants in the city.

Sushi Ninja

Located on Savannah Highway, Sushi Ninja sells all manner of sushi dishes. Visitors can enjoy sashimi and nigiri, or try one of the restaurant’s humorously named specialty rolls like the Godzilla or the Crouching Tiger. Reviews of the restaurant are overwhelmingly positive, with many even saying it’s the best sushi they’ve ever eaten. The chefs at the restaurant also partake in many local food festivals, which is a great option for those who want to try something small before booking a table for a full meal.

Zen Asian Fusion

If you’ve found yourself in West Ashley, Zen Asian Fusion is definitely worth a visit. Well known for its specialty rolls which are also hilariously named, it’s a great kitschy location for an evening out. We recommend making a night of it. Start off with a light meal in Zen Asian Fusion before then heading to Craft Conundrum for a few craft beers. It’s a great way to spend an evening with friends.

O-Ku is one of the newest sushi restaurants in Charleston, and also has a presence in Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA. The décor is truly romantic, and is a great place to take a significant other. The chefs at O-Ku only cook with the finest ingredients, with their fish coming from the finest fish markets in Scotland, Norway, New Zealand, and Hawaii. From sushi specialties to petite plates, there are plenty of menu options for those who love Japanese food, and there are also a number of hot entrees for those who prefer their food to be cooked.

Rue De Jean

Okay, so this isn’t purely a sushi restaurant, but it’s the ideal place to visit if you fancy some sushi and your date would prefer a burger with fries. Located on St John Street, the restaurant has a gorgeous French bistro atmosphere, and feels warm and inviting all year round. Due to its popularity, guests are advised to book in advance, whether visiting for brunch, lunch or dinner. Rue De Jean also has a pretty extensive wine list, so leave the car at home if you want to try a glass or two while dining.

Although Charleston doesn’t have tons of sushi restaurants within its borders, there are still options available to those who have a craving. Give one of the above four restaurants a try – you won’t regret it!
