The singer Adele asked Spotify for the default activation of the shuffle mode when playing an album.
In response to the singer’s request, the streaming platform announced the modification of that dynamic, keeping open the possibility of adjusting the playback mode manually.
After the release of “30”, her most recent album, British singer Adele expressed her objections to Spotify’s default provision to shuffle an album, even from a Premium account, if the main button accompanying the track list is pressed.
Adele made her point of view known to Spotify, and her request was accepted by the company. After the news was made public, the artist confirmed her influence on the decision, stating that this has been “her only request that I had in our ever-changing industry.” Justifying her stance, she noted via Twitter, “We don’t create albums with so much care and thought put into our track list for no reason. Our art tells a story and our stories should be heard as we intended.”
With a brief retort to that same tweet, Spotify confirmed its endorsement by commenting “anything for you” in response.
Spotify shuffle mode
Following the implementation of this change, already available to Spotify Premium users, the default playback of an album will respect the original order of the tracks. If you want to play any record production in shuffle mode anyway, the option remains available in the player itself, next to the other playback controls.
Although this determination directly influences the experience of Spotify users, the change seems to be more of a nod to the artists present on the platforms. Not every album is a simple selection of songs. Just as Adele sought to narrate a personal story throughout the development of her latest album, other record productions follow a similar spirit within varied styles, as is also the case with concept albums or those based on a sequence of movements, for example.
Expanding on the coverage of this news, Spotify extended a press release. “As Adele mentioned, we’re excited to share that we’ve begun rolling out a new Premium feature that has long been requested by both users and artists to make ‘play’ the default button on all albums. For those users who still wish to shuffle an album, you can go to the standby playback view and select the ‘shuffle’ switch. As always, we will continue to iterate our products and features to create the best experiences for both artists and their fans,” said a company spokesperson.
