Top Gun: Maverick box office

Top Gun: Maverick grosses more than $1 billion worldwide

Tom Cruise’s film becomes the first film to surpass this figure in 2022 and the second in the pandemic era.

Although many were wary of Tom Cruise’s claims that he was going to be the savior of movie theaters around the world in the pandemic era, it seems that the actor has achieved what he promised and, despite having arrived in theaters around the world with the sequel to a movie from the 80’s, he is literally sweeping the box office.

In fact, after doing the official tally for each weekend, it can already be said that Top Gun: Maverick has passed the $1 billion mark in box office after earning $521.7 million in U.S. theaters and $484.7 million in theaters worldwide.

A figure that has made the film starring Tom Cruise the first to reach this figure in 2022 and the second on the list in the entire pandemic era, only surpassed by Spider-Man: No Way Home, which reached $1.089 billion, a figure that could still be surpassed by Top Gun: Maverick, as it still has a long way to go in theaters.

According to a study conducted by Paramount, 16% of the total audience of Top Gun: Maverick has gone more than once to see the film in the theater, while 4% have gone four or more times to enjoy it in theaters. This data supports Tom Cruise’s decision not to release the film on platforms in the near future.

In addition to being the highest-grossing film starring Cruise in his career, it is also the first film of the actor to exceed one billion dollars as the other highest-grossing production of the veteran performer, Mission Impossible: Fallout reached 791 million dollars in box office in 2018.

The figure is even more impressive if we take into account that the sequel to the 80’s movie is going head-to-head at the box office with two other blockbusters such as the third installment of Jurassic World and Pixar’s new, Lightyear (the latter, without much success so far).
