The Russo brothers are preparing a big-budget sci-fi movie for Netflix

The growing competition among streaming services has made Netflix consider whether it is really interesting to release hundreds of movies every year to the public or to make fewer productions but with bigger budgets, better stories and artists with more cache.

The Russo brothers’ new project for Netflix makes the leap to science fiction, and explores having an exceptional cast.

Netflix knows that, in order to continue leading the streaming market, it has to bet on original content that captivates the attention of the general public.

This summer, for example, the platform will release The Invisible Agent, the new thriller starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. The Russo brothers, directors of Avengers Endgame, are helming the film.

The 2020 deal between Netflix and the Russo’s has already begun to bear fruit: the filmmakers produced Tyler Rake, the action movie starring Chris Hemsworth that already has a sequel on the way.

Now, the Russo brothers are already moving forward on their next project, which will see them make the leap into science fiction. It’s The Electric State and, as with The Invisible Agent, the Russo’s want an all-star cast.

Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) is already on board for the film. The actress will play a young woman in a futuristic past, roaming the west alongside a mysterious robot and a most eccentric drifter.

Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) has long been in talks to join the project although a deal has not yet been finalized.

The Electric State is based on the illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, regular collaborators with the Russo brothers, have adapted Stålenhag’s work for the film’s screenplay.

Although The Electric State is not expected to reach the same production budget as The Invisible Agent (200 million), theirs is estimated to be around 100 million, which is not an insignificant amount either.

At a time when there are more and more streaming platforms in an oversaturated scenario, having movies and series that appeal to viewers is one of the priorities for Netflix, which must regain the trust of its investors after the spring crisis.
