Is Baby Yoda a copy of Gizmo?

LeisureIs Baby Yoda a copy of Gizmo?

The creator of ‘Gremlins’ believes that Grogu (Baby Yoda) is a “blatant copy” of Gizmo, the protagonist of his films

The defenseless creature from the Star Wars universe has been labeled a “blatant copy” by Joe Dante, creator of Gremlins. According to the filmmaker’s comments to the San Francisco Chronicles, the creature also known as Baby Yoda is nothing more than a copy of Gizmo, the Gremlin star of the 1980s hit.

There is no need to compare two legends, but Joe Dante has turned this into a personal struggle. It all started while the filmmaker was talking about the impact his Gremlins saga has had on the industry.

“I think longevity is really the key to this character (Gizmo), who is essentially like a baby,” he commented during the interview. Then, of course, he offered his take on certain works today, “Which brings me, of course, to the issue of Baby Yoda, which is completely ripped off and is just a copy. A blatant one, I would say.”

Thus Joe Dante completed his idea, blindly considering that his Gizmo is the only baby-shaped character created to generate attachment between the viewer and the show. And, of course, to have the excuse to sell toys and stuffed animals that everyone will want to buy.

Fortunately, it seems that for Dante the situation does not require drastic measures. The filmmaker has no plans to take this any further. He does believe that Lucasfilm and Disney need to do better when it comes to crediting the works that have “inspired” them.

On the other hand, Joe is quite busy at the moment. We know that Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, an animated series coming to HBO Max this fall, will be released soon. It will feature several relevant actors, including Ming-Na Wen from The Book of Boba Fett, BD Wong from Jurassic World Dominion and James Hong from Everything Everywhere at Once.

We know that the iconic Baby Yoda will return to The Mandalorian in the series’ third season – when will it premiere? So far, Disney is targeting its release for February 2023, though the exact day is unknown. As for Dante’s lovable Gizmo, he will once again play a rather important role in Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, which tells the story of how the little monster meets Sam Wing in East China.
