Marvel’s worst movie could get a sequel despite poor box office and bad reviews
Eternals will have a sequel. Or so seems to suggest a leak from Tales From the Mod Queue , which signals Marvel’s intentions to continue the story. That, despite divided reviews and poor reception among fans. But according to the moderators of the Reddit threat intended for Marvel information, the studio is interested in delving deeper into one of the film’s heroes. In other words, Marvel would be seriously considering expanding the context stories not of the group of superheroes, but perhaps some of the most emblematic.
Always according to Tales From the Mod Queue, the Eternals sequel is “on track,” which would at least indicate early production previews. The leak suggests that the studio is analyzing the possibility of integrating the characters to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe stories completely. Also, of tying the film’s general idea of mythology to a much deeper layer than what was shown on screen. The rumor seems to coincide with some easter eggs that were included in several recent Marvel productions that allude to the Eternals.
For one, posters of Kingo’s (Kumail Nanjiani) public persona could be seen in the recently completed Ms. Marvel. As will be recalled, the Eternal pretends to be part of a long line of Bollywood actors, one of whose posters the program showed. Also, fans found a similar image in the first photographs on the set of filming the second season of Loki. In them, a poster advertising a Kingo movie could be seen, although it is unclear if it is the same version of the character that was shown in the film.
Of course, a new Eternals movie, considered a flop for Marvel, is a risky project that the studio considers carefully. At the moment, Chloe Zhao does not appear to be involved in the project. Although the source suggests that, if she is, she would be “very restrained” by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito. Indeed, one of the sticking points of the potential sequel is the possible total change in tone and pacing of the film.
That would mean that the much-publicized creative freedom Zhao enjoyed during the filming of Eternals would be dramatically curtailed. Also, that there would be modifications not only in the way the superheroes are portrayed, but the relationships that are established between them. With half of the team kidnapped by the Celestial Arishem and the rest in the middle of a special mission, everything is confusing. It is also unclear what would be the plot of a sequel that should interconnect both ideas. Would it focus on the search for Thena, Makkari, Druig and the rest of the Eternals in the company of Harry Styles’ Eros?
Or would it focus on the rescue and release of Sersi, Phastos and Kingo after the trial by Arishem? Either plot line is complex enough to support a sequel. But, for now, there are no official details on the matter. In fact, there is considerable silence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe regarding the information provided by Eternals. Beyond the easter eggs and, also, the surprise appearance of two Celestials in Thor: Love and Thunder, the presence of the heroes went unnoticed in the MCU. Even the gigantic figure of the Celestial Tiamut, which should be visible and a source of wonder in the Marvel world, has so far not been mentioned.
Chloe Zhao’s Eternals has proven problematic for Marvel since its 2021 release. The film has a 47% positive review rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest for the production company. On the other hand, it has an audience rating of 6.3 out of 10 on IMDb. So, if a sequel were to happen, it would be a risk based on a considerable failure of plot and tone. One that Marvel doesn’t really need right now in the midst of the audience and critical problems it is going through.
If there really is a sequel in the works for Eternals, it could be announced at Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic Con panel on Saturday, July 23.
