Course to learn High Valyrian to get you ready for Game of Thrones: The House of the Dragon
HBO Max will premiere Game of Thrones: The House of the Dragon, the prequel series to the smash television hit Game of Thrones, and this summer we will sharpen our weapons and strengthen our armor to return to Westeros, the fantastic world created by George R. R. Martin in his A Song of Ice and Fire saga.
Set centuries before the main series, The House of the Dragon will plunge us into an unusually peaceful Seven Kingdoms, where men are trained for a war that never seems to come.
Naturally, that is about to change: House Targaryen is about to plunge into a dark age and a bloody civil war.
On the occasion of the imminent premiere of the series and the celebration of the San Diego Comic-Con, HBO Max and Duolingo have joined forces to offer fans an updated learning experience of High Valyrian, the ancient language fallen into disuse in the saga.
High Valyrian plays an important role in Game of Thrones: it’s only natural that many fans have at some point mentioned the word “Dracarys,” used by Daenerys Targaryen to turn everything in front of her dragons to ash.
David Peterson has helped shape a course for learning more than 150 new words and more than 700 sentences in High Valyrian with which to update the old Duolingo course, according to Collider.
The construction of the language comes from the words and sentences collected in the novels of George R. R. Martin, and contribute to build a fictional language in the same way that Tolkien once did with Elvish.
The increased presence of dragons in Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon will make the use of Valyrian more common than in the original series. Don’t let any character in Westeros throw you off the scent by resorting to the ancient language of the Valyrians.
