US ambassador in China resigns after the abandonment of the Paris Agreement

US Ambassador to China David Rank has resigned in response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.

“Rank has made a personal decision,” confirmed State Department sources quoted by the US television network CNN. “We appreciate the years of service dedicated to the State Department,” he added.

However, sources aware of the decision cited by the chain, have indicated the decision is directly linked to the aforementioned decision of Trump. Rank, who took office at number two at the US Embassy in Beijing in January 2016, had previously held several positions in the State Department.

Trump argues that the commitments made in this “bad agreement” hurt the United States and, in particular, the development of its economy and the creation of jobs. The objective of the White House tenant is to look for a more favorable and “fair” document, although for the moment he has not clarified how or when he will do so.

The gesture of Trump places the United States next to Syria and Nicaragua, who also did not join an agreement of which more than 190 countries are part. Former US President Barack Obama had pledged that the United States reduce pollutant emissions by 26 to 28 percent by 2015.

The United States is the second most polluting country in the world, behind China. Experts estimate that it emits more than 15 percent of the world’s gases into the atmosphere.
