Jamel Myles, a 9-year-old boy from the city of Denver, Colorado, has committed suicide because of school bullying suffered after announcing days before at school that he was gay.
His mother, Leia Pierce, affirms that the bullying he suffered since he announced a few days earlier that he was gay at school, just after the beginning of the course, has been the cause of the suicide of her son, who started fourth grade at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School last Monday.
After telling his family he was gay, Jamel admitted feeling scared, but his mother reassured him: “I still love you.” Later, he felt proud and wanted to tell his classmates at school. The harassment was deadly. “I’m sorry he did not come to me,” the mother told Fox 31 in Denver, after learning that the young man did talk to his sister about the hell he was subjected to.
Denver police are investigating the death of the child as suicide. His body was found Tuesday at his home. Pierce has decided to share his story so that the death of his son can raise awareness about the consequences of harassment.
