Former campaign manager and former political advisor to Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, has been arrested for donor fraud in the campaign to build the wall with Mexico. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has accused the former president’s advisor and three other people (Brian Kolfage, Andrew Badolato and Timothy Shea) of appropriating the money collected from the donations.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, the four defendants “orchestrated a scheme to defraud donors out of hundreds of thousands of dollars” from the “We Built the Wall” campaign, the one destined to the construction of the wall on the border with Mexico. This was a ‘crowdfunding’ initiative in which they had raised more than $25 million.
Brian Kolfage, one of the defendants, “repeatedly assured that they would not take a penny for their salaries,” according to the prosecution’s brief, which also recalls that Bannon went so far as to say publicly “we are a voluntary organization”.
Shortly after the charges were filed, Bannon was arrested.
