Peru became this Wednesday the country with the highest mortality in the world due to Covid-19, after Belgium corrected its number of deaths due to the coronavirus and subtracted 121 deaths from its balance of the impact of the disease.

The rectification of the Belgian authorities made Peru now hold that world record, a mark that was a matter of days away from being reached, since the outbreak is far from being controlled and deaths follow one another by hundreds in the sixth country in the world with the most confirmed cases, accumulating more than 607,000 infections.

The 28,000 deaths from the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Peru translate into a mortality rate of 85.8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, the result of dividing the number of deaths by the national population of 32.6 million, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics and Information (INEI).

For its part, the new coronavirus mortality rate in Belgium stood at 85.5 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, now reporting 9,878 occises among a population of just over 11.5 million.

The Belgian government made this downward correction to its coronavirus death count after initially considering suspicious cases within the official pandemic figures.

The correction was announced Wednesday after a detailed review of a series of deaths in nursing homes that had been counted twice or whose causes of death did not match the symptoms produced by the coronavirus.

This contrasts with the case of Peru, where there are still thousands of suspected coronavirus deaths that are not included in government reports.

In total, more than 65,000 excess deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the pandemic compared to previous years, since March, deaths nationwide have increased by 120% over the previous two years.

Suspected deaths in Peru total 10,443, according to the latest report published on August 18 by the National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control of the Ministry of Health.
