The United States has surpassed 13 million cases of coronavirus this Friday, according to the latest update of the Johns Hopkins University balance sheet.
The country has registered a total of at least 13,062,364 infections so far this pandemic, according to the data collected by this institution.
In the last complete case update on Thursday, when Thanksgiving was held, the country recorded about 110,611 infections. Experts and the government called for no travel to celebrate the holidays and for keeping the celebrations with limited guests.
The United States is the country with the highest number of coronavirus cases and also the highest number of deaths, having recorded 264,684 deaths so far this pandemic.
Texas is the state with the most cases since the beginning of the health crisis, with 1.2 million infections, followed by California with 1.1 million and Florida with nearly 980,000 infections.
On the other hand, 4.8 million Americans have overcome the disease.
The leading scientific authority on the fight against the coronavirus in the United States, Anthony Fauci, has asked Americans in an interview to get the vaccine even if they have had or think they have had the disease.
Fauci has stressed that, because of the short time the virus has been around, it is difficult to know how long the antibodies generated when the virus is passed on will last, but evidence from other similar diseases such as SARS in 2002 indicates that the antibodies lose strength over time.
Daily infections and deaths continue to increase in the United States and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) model has predicted that the country could exceed 300,000 deaths before Christmas.
The worsening of the figures has led to action by governments such as that of Greater Los Angeles, the county most affected by the virus at the moment, which has announced a confinement that will last three weeks until December 20th
Among the measures that this new confinement implies, according to Fox, is the reduction of capacity to 20 percent in shopping centers and 50 percent in gyms, while social gatherings are prohibited outside the home except for religious events and protests. Previously, face-to-face meals in restaurants had been restricted.
