Four people were dead and at least 14 agents were injured during the assault on the US Capitol, according to local authorities, who have also notified 52 detainees. The assault on Congress came as both houses were in session to confirm Biden’s election victory in last November’s election.

Four dead

Washington authorities had initially reported the death of a woman, who was shot by Capitol Police. Three other unidentified persons died as a result of “medical emergencies” on Capitol Hill premises, said Robert Contee, chief of the Washington Metropolitan Police.

At an overnight press conference, Contee reported the deaths but did not give further details on how they occurred. Some 14 police officers have been injured during the Capitol riots, two of whom are “seriously injured.

More than 50 detainees

Police have arrested 52 people both on the Capitol and in other areas of the US capital, of whom some 30 were arrested for violations of the curfew imposed by the Washington mayor’s office. Muriel Bowser, the mayor, has extended the state of public emergency in the capital for two weeks, until after the inauguration of Joe Biden, president-elect, scheduled for January 20.

Robert Contee, head of the Washington Metropolitan Police, has assured that the agents located and deactivated two homemade bombs in the vicinity of the headquarters of the national committees (secretariats) of the Democratic and Republican parties (DNC and RNC, respectively). A vehicle has also been found in the area of the Capitol where there was a rifle and up to ten Molotov cocktails, according to several media reports.

Trump, Incendiary Statements

Far from sowing calm, Donald Trump, the outgoing president, had urged his allies to interfere in the process of ratifying the presidential election. He had insisted that Mike Pence, his vice president, arrogate to himself a power not granted to him by the Constitution, and harangued his supporters to continue fighting during a morning rally in Washington.

Donald Trump’s supporters went to the U.S. Capitol and forced their way into the public building, until the authorities managed to evict them after three hours of fighting and shooting against those who stormed the place.
