Burma’s leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, arrested early this morning as part of a military coup d’état, has called on the population to oppose the coup and “resist firmly”, according to a statement released by her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD).
The statement, published on its behalf by the party through one of its verified accounts on the social network Facebook, criticizes the actions of the Burmese Army and calls on the population to “protest against the coup staged by the military”.
Thus, it highlights that “the Army’s actions show no consideration for the coronavirus pandemic and bring the country back under military dictatorship.” “The population is called upon to totally oppose the military coup and firmly resist against it,” he adds.
The coup has come in the wake of recent tensions in the wake of the November general election, in which both the opposition and the military have alleged possible irregularities, albeit without presenting evidence.
The statement on the arrest of Suu Kyi and other Burmese leaders has been signed by the acting president, former General Myint Swe, until now vice president. As acting president, Swe has transferred all power to Army Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing for the duration of the one-year state of emergency.
On the other hand, the Army chief’s office has assured that they have taken this measure in response to unfounded theories of electoral fraud and that the military will hold “a free and fair general election” once the state of emergency is over.
In the order signed by the newly sworn-in interim president, it is pointed out that “if this problem is not properly addressed (in reference to the irregularities denounced in the elections), there will be obstacles in the democratic transition of the nation”.
In addition, they have indicated that the electoral roll will be revised and the electoral commission will be “reestablished”. The military occupy the streets of the capital, Naipyidó, and of the main city, Rangoon, while telephone and internet lines have been cut.
