At least eight people have been killed in a shooting late Thursday at the FedEx courier company’s facilities near the airport of the city, located in the U.S. state of Indiana, police have confirmed.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Genae Cook said the shooting, which broke out at around 11 p.m. local time, resulted in several injuries and the death of the person responsible, who allegedly committed suicide.
Cook has indicated that for the moment it has not been possible to determine whether the person responsible for the incident is an employee of the company or the motives for the incident, although he stressed that an investigation is underway, as reported by the US television network NBC.
For its part, FedEx has spoken of “a tragic shooting” at the facility. “Safety is our top priority and our thoughts are with all those affected. We are working to gather information and are cooperating with the authorities in their investigation,” he concluded.
