The U.S. Air Force unveiled a new artist’s rendering of the futuristic B-21 Raider bomber, in what was the third version of the Northrop Grumman-developed aircraft design.

Previous images revealed only a pair of windows, while the recent illustration shows at least one new narrow window slanted on the left side, which likely makes for another on the right side. In addition, the details show an extremely curious and never-before-seen cockpit windshield configuration. Overall, the new sketch was largely unchanged from previous sketches.

The B-21 would replace the aging B-52 Stratofortress bombers and B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, which were also manufactured by Northrop Grumman and are the most complex aircraft in the world and most expensive to maintain.

The B-21 program continues to execute the engineering and manufacturing development phase and is focused on scaling infrastructure and manufacturing capability across the industrial supply base. “Nuclear modernization is a priority for the Department of Defense and the Air Force, and the B-21 is key to that plan,” said Randall Walden, director of the Force Area Rapid Capabilities Office. Randall asserts that the architecture’s built-in feature makes the bomber “effective as the threat environment evolves.”

This bomber is designed to perform conventional and nuclear missions, as well as operate in tomorrow’s high-end threat environment. It will be a visible and flexible component of the nuclear triad. The aircraft, as an earlier report in 2018 indicated, has a mature and stable design, and will deliver nuclear weapons that can be withdrawn or redirected after launch if circumstances dictate.

At Edwards Air Force Base in California, the chosen backdrop for the B-21 Raider, testing of these models is scheduled to begin in May 2022.
