The attacker had come to New Zealand from Sri Lanka. According to police, he was a supporter of the Islamic State terrorist group.
The attack, described as “terrorist” by the New Zealand authorities, took place in a supermarket in Auckland.
Prime Minister Jacinda Arden appeared immediately_”First of all my thoughts are with the six innocent people who were attacked, three I understand are seriously injured. It was a violent attack. It makes no sense and I am very sorry that it happened”.
According to official sources, the assailant killed by the police was under 24-hour surveillance.
They explained that, due to the tracking of the Islamist, they were able to shoot him within 60 seconds of the stabbings.
