Vegan mother sentenced to life in prison for the death of her 18-month-old son from starvation
The mother and her partner stated that they fed their children only raw vegetables and fruits
A 38-year-old Florida mother who followed a strict vegan diet has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2019 death of her 18-month-old son.
She is Sheila O’Leary, a resident of the town of Cape Coral, in the southwestern part of the state and on Monday was sentenced to spend the rest of her life in prison after being found guilty last June of six charges, including first-degree murder for the death of one of her sons, Ezra O’Leary.
According to the information in the police report, the woman called the 911 emergency phone in the month of September 2019 after noticing that her son was not breathing, however, when the paramedics arrived at the home, they found the lifeless minor, who weighed only 8 kilos and was the size of a seven-month-old baby.
The mother and her husband, Ryan Patrick O’Leary (who remains in jail awaiting trial on the same charges) told investigators in their statements that they fed their children only raw vegetables and fruits, although Ezra was still breastfeeding. In addition, agents discovered that two of the couple’s other children, ages 3 and 5, had signs of malnutrition.
The couple was arrested two months after the child’s death. According to the local WINK channel, the woman’s lawyer, Lee Hollander, explained that they will appeal the verdict announced in a Lee County court, after the woman rejected a plea agreement with the State Prosecutor’s Office for which she was to be sentenced to 30 years in prison.
