What it is and what it does

A miniature circuit breaker (MCB) is a small electromechanical device that protects a building from electrical overload, short circuits, electrical faults, and the less common circuit switching. In essence, it ensures that when there is a problem (as described), the electrical circuit is broken and no further damage can occur.

The old-fashioned fuses

In the olden days (and unfortunately still today), the task of breaking a circuit when a problem occurs has been done by old-fashioned fuses. Fuses work as follows: when an electrical problem (such as a short-circuit or overload) occurs, a little wire within the fuse where the electricity runs through heats up to such an extent that the wire burns – hence breaking the circuit and keeping everything safe. The miniature circuit breaker

The miniature circuit breaker also cuts the circuit in case of overload, but it does so in a different way; it relies on the property of electromagnetic switching. When a certain threshold of electrical current has been reached, the electrical current produces enough magnetic energy to activate a switch, thereby breaking the circuit.
