The Roblox gaming platform has registered more than 150 million active users per month, Roblox Corporation announced during its annual developer conference. That’s a huge jump from the 115 million monthly subscribers the title garnered in February, before the world was confined by the coronavirus pandemic. By comparison, last May Mojang Studios reported that Minecraft had 126 million players per month.
The success of Roblox, which is available on Xbox One, PC, iOS and Android, is explained by the multiple virtual worlds it offers that can be created by developers using Roblox Studio’s tools. Most of the most popular games are free and are monetized through the sale of items, which are paid for with the virtual currency robux. The goal of David Baszucki, CEO of Roblox Corporation, is to create a metaverse where all universes are connected as in Ready Player One.
In total, Roblox has some 345,000 creators who earn money from their content. The company’s forecast is that by the end of 2020, 250 million dollars will be earned by all of them. Last year they collectively pocketed $110 million. If Roblox Corporation’s forecasts are true, the year-on-year increase will be 127%. This growth is explained by a combination of factors, including the pandemic, the growing catalogue of universes, new development tools and the internationalization of the game.
