2020 is coming to an end and, as the Steam tradition dictates, it looks back at the year’s best-selling games, the best new releases, the best early access games and the best virtual reality experiences, all measured by gross revenue (copy sales, in-game transactions and DLC). The platform has also revealed the most played titles and the controller-compatible titles that have registered the most players.
Steam has been offering this retrospective for five years and there are three games that have always appeared in the platinum category of best sellers: GTA V, Dota 2 and CS:GO. Rainbow Six: Siege and PUBG have been repeated four times. In the list we can also see new releases such as Doom Eternal, Fall Guys and Cyberpunk 2077. The new CD game Projekt Red stands out from the rest as it appears in all categories except those in which it cannot (virtual reality and early access).
The list of the best releases takes into account the total gross revenue of the game during the first two weeks after its release. There are 25 games in the platinum category and from all of them we highlight a: Grounded, Borderlands 3, The Outer Worlds, Half-Life: Alyx, Baldur’s Gate 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding, Temtem, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Sea of Thieves, Persona 4 Golden, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Football Manager 2021, Mafia: Definitive Edition, Marvel’s Avengers and FIFA 21.
Regarding the most played games, the platinum category is composed by titles that during this year have registered a minimum of 200.000 concurrent players. They have been the following: Dota 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Terraria, Among Us, CS:GO, GTA V, Monster Hunter: World, Life is Strange 2, Destiny 2, PUBG and Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord.
On the platinum list of early access games with the highest gross revenue in 2020 we have 11 names including Torchlight III, Skater XL, Factorio, Risk of Rain 2, Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, Deep Rock Galactic, Noita and Squad. If we jump to the virtual reality titles that have generated the most money we find Skyrim VR, Half-Life: Alyx, Beat Saber, Superhot VR, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Boneworks.
Finally, we look at the controller-compatible titles that more active players have registered using a peripheral. They are the following ones: Cyberpunk 2077, Hades, FIFA 21, Destiny 2, NBA 2K20, Persona 4 Golden, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, GTA V, Dark Souls III, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Monster Hunter: World and Fall Guys.
