Nintendo has presented its latest fiscal data and has released some noteworthy numbers, such as the fact that Switch, its hybrid console, is already the fifth best-selling console in history, surpassing Wii.

As of December 31, 2021, 103.54 million Switch had been sold worldwide, surpassing the Wii’s mark of 101.63 million. It was also the fastest console to reach 100 million units sold.
We have Switch for a while

And it seems that the ceiling is far away, because the pace of sales is still good (they expect to sell about 23 million during this first quarter, a little less than expected due to the lack of chips) and, in the words of Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo, the console would be in the middle of its life cycle, breaking with the usual scheme that would place its declibe in the sixth year on the market.

And it is that in this 2022 will have a good bunch of exclusive games, starting with the recent Pokémon Legends: Arceus, but still ahead still Kirby and The Forgotten Land, Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3 and the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Nintendo Switch went on sale in March 2017, although two revisions of the console have subsequently been released. On the one hand a Lite model, focused on portable gaming, launched in September 2019, and on the other the OLED model, with a better screen and storage capacity, available since October last year. Their prices are currently around $200, $300 and $350, respectively.

The best-selling consoles in history

The throne of the best-selling consoles in history is like this right now, but it seems clear that Switch will be at least third before the end of the year, and everything points to it overtaking Nintendo DS and PS2 sooner or later.

  1. PlayStation 2 – 155 million
  2. Nintendo DS – 154.02 million
  3. Game Boy / Game Boy Color – 118.69 million
  4. PlayStation 4 – 106 million
  5. Nintendo Switch – 103.54 million
  6. PlayStation – 102.49 million
  7. Wii – 101.63 million
