Google Hangouts and Google Duo disappear

Google confirms the closure of two more of its services

It is common for Google to introduce new services from time to time. However, most of them result in a resounding failure, or technologies emerge that overwhelm them, so from time to time it’s time to say goodbye to some of the tech giant’s tools.

If you were one of the users of Hangouts or Google Duo, pay attention to this news, because your services will disappear, but will migrate or merge with others.

From Hangouts to Google Chat

A few days ago, Google revealed in a new blog post that Hangouts will be phased out in November 2022 and computer and mobile device users will be asked to migrate to Google Chat before then. Chat data from the Hangouts platform will automatically be available in Google Chat and users will also have the option to download all their Hangouts data before the platform is removed.

“Starting today, people using Hangouts on mobile devices will see a screen in the app prompting them to switch to Chat in Gmail or the Chat app. Similarly, people using the Hangouts extension on Chrome will be prompted to switch to Chat on the web or install the Chat web app. In July, people using Hangouts in Gmail on the web will be upgraded to Chat in Gmail,” Google said in the release.

Hangouts users will continue to see an in-product notice for at least a month before the Hangouts web is removed. After that, the Hangouts website will automatically begin redirecting visitors to the Google Chat website.

Hangouts was introduced in 2013 and was the successor to GChat (not to be confused with the new Google Chat). The original GChat, or as some people know it, Google Talk, was shut down in early June. After Hangouts suffered a similar fate later this year, it looks like the new Google Chat will be Google’s last attempt at providing an integrated cross-device instant messaging service.

Duo merges with Meet

Another Google service that is going away, at least as we knew it, is Google Duo. Google also announced that this service would be integrated within Google Meet.

“In the coming weeks, we’ll be adding all the features of Google Meet to the Duo app, so users can easily schedule a video meeting at a time that’s convenient for everyone, or continue to use video calling to instantly connect with a person or group. Later this year, we will rename the Duo app to Google Meet, our only video communications service on Google that is available to everyone at no cost.”

Duo’s existing video calling features will remain, including the ability to video call friends and family by phone number or email address, use fun filters and effects, send messages, and ask the Google Assistant to call using existing devices. All conversation history, contacts and messages will still be stored in the app and there will not be a new app to download.
